The Pros and Cons of Black light Body Painting

I love playing with blacklight and honestly who does not. There is something about making objects glow that brings out the kid in all of us. The colors are so bright. So as you can Imagine Black light bodypainting is a blast. however it does have a few drawbacks.

First off you have only a limited color pallet. There is really only 7 colors and those are often very close to another color. Say Green and Yellow .. The are so close that really in most cases its hard to tell where one color starts and the other stops. the same can be said for Red, and Orange. And White ... say goodbye to that color its really just a very pale blue and even then the paint shows up with a little blue tint.

The Stuff is Toxic if your not sure where your source is. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard stories about people using poster paints for Body paint. Next time you have a moment to look in the paint isle look at the kids paint... Most of it will say Non-Toxic (this means your kid does not have to wear gloves while using it... says nothing about bathing) However the “Dayglow” paint most of the time will have very clear warnings about not to use on skin. So its very important to use the body paint that was designed to be used on the human skin. if you don’t your asking for trouble. And even if its to be used on the skin i would never paint on someone who was pregnant just to be sure just seems like a bad idea to me (I have never seen a scientific study on its safety till then better safe then sorry)

Light Pollution there is nothing worse then painting up a model for a gig with black light in mind to have the a white spotlight over the model and watching all your hard work not show up in its full glory.

While shooting in the studio you have to use a digital camera (unless you are Very good with a flim and have like 1600 speed film) and a tripod. During the L.U.V Project I really started to miss my tripod. The model had to sit very still and hold their breath while I took the shot and I had to be very careful with the camera because just the act of pushing the button would be enough to blur the shot. As you can Imagine the painting passing storm was extra difficult because the the model “Squish” had to hold the other model (Imp) over his head and then hold her there very still. The first 5 shots were so blurry that we could not used them.

Now for the Pros’
The stuff comes off very easy! simple wash and it comes off with out much scrubbing in comparison to most body paint .

Contrast , Contrast , Contrast . Its so easy to play with contrast of light and dark with this. I find it very easy to do and the effects are very dramatic.
